Common Issues with Canvas Inbox + JAWS

• Messages Not Being Read Properly: The message threads may not be announced clearly. Message content may not be automatically read when selected.
• Navigation Problems: JAWS may not properly announce or focus on buttons like 'Reply', 'Archive', or 'Compose'. It’s difficult to know which message is selected or expanded.
• Unread vs. Read Messages: JAWS doesn’t always indicate whether a message is unread, making it hard to prioritize.
• Mislabeling or Missing Landmarks: Canvas Inbox lacks consistent ARIA landmarks and labeling for better screen reader navigation.

Tips & Workarounds for JAWS Users

• Reading Messages: Use Insert+F7 to list headings and links. Then use arrow keys to explore the message body.
• Compose or Reply: Use the Tab key repeatedly after opening Inbox to reach 'Compose' or 'Reply'. JAWS may not announce it clearly, but you can verify by pressing Insert+Tab to hear the focused element.
• Navigating Threads: Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move between message previews and use Enter to open them.
• Identifying Message Status: Unread messages usually appear bold visually, but JAWS may not announce this. Instead, rely on message order or ask your institution's accessibility team for assistance.
